ABOUT ETHIOPIAN TOURIST TRADING ENTERPRISE

Ethiopian Tourist Trading Enterprise is established under Proclamation No. 106/1993 to accomplish the purpose of establishment, which is operating duty-free service, duty-paid service, and art and craft products for customers. The Enterprise is located in downtown Addis Ababa, called 22 Square. The company started production in 1957 E.C. with six employees with the objectives of promoting Ethiopia through different local community handicraft products and souvenir items.

Gradually, ETTE is becoming a public enterprise that engages in duty-free service and sells the same product that is found in duty-free shops by taking taxes and making the product available for local customers. These days, ETTE is one of the major profitable public enterprises in the country with respect to duty-free service. ETTE also plans to expand the overall business through turnkey projects in which it converts the production center into a center of excellence as well as plans to build a duty-free complex around Addis Ababa Airport.

The Father of Ethiopian Tourism: Hapteselassie Tafesse (1927-2017)

The man known as the father of Ethiopia’s tourism, Habteselassie Tafesse, died on Wednesday, August 9th. Known to have coined the phrase “13 months of sunshine,” he was instrumental in helping make Ethiopia a tourist destination rather than the face of poverty to the world.
A gifted communicator and an orator, he was an advocate for the transformation of the country as a unique nation, one that can market its culture and bring resources to its coffers. The 90-year-old was born in 1927 in Addis Ababa to a career diplomat—Tafesse.
He lived his formative years abroad in major international cities, giving him world exposure in earnest and the ability to speak eight languages eloquently. However, mastering the Amharic language became a lifelong struggle for him. He graduated from Teferi Mekonnen and went on and eventually graduated from Ohio’s Oberlin College government and public relations.
His first voyage into public service was as the head of press affairs with Ethiopia’s Foreign Ministry. He became a natural fit, becoming the hub for international journalists and foreigners with the Ethiopian government.
